In present New York, the team finds no proof against the Haas suspects and concentrates on the twins, one of which is taken hostage by filthy-rich jihadist family member Hamza Kouri, so they plot to get her out past Liam's team. In the future, the FBI computer system is hacked and confidential files go public, leading Alex to the conclusion that a second bomb is in play somewhere in NYC. Back at Quantico, the recruits are given individual assignments, only to realize they are all connected as part of a lesson to look about the bigger picture.

The NATS attend a class with guest speaker Dr. Susan Langdon, played by Anne Heche. Dr. Langdon is a former agent and profiler who tasks the trainees with looking at serial killer cases to find the one victim that doesn't fit the case, but when Simon becomes too good at finding things that don't belong, it's his life that becomes endangered. In the future, Alex is interrogated by a highly sophisticated FBI team while Ryan's life hangs in the balance.

In Quantico, the class is mandated to screen the next batch of potential recruits. However they also concentrate of some of their own secrets, motivating some exposure despite likely consequences, such as Simon's Israeli Gaza occupation forces past. Caleb risks Shelby's love to protect her against his father by timely exposing her Saudi half-sister. In New York, Liam braves discredited Miranda to lead the plan to lure the real traitor now Alex is formally charged. The others scold her an utter ingrate, yet patriotically collaborate. Nimah discovers that the are all being watched and tells the others, Liam watches Raina visit Hashmi in hospital. At Quantico, the NATs are given a long weekend off for New Year's Eve. Alex, Natalie, Shelby and Nimah, all fleeing from family problems, try to spend the weekend drinking and reviewing cold cases. Nimah tries to have a heart-to-heart with Miranda about her son's radicalization, with mixed results. In the present, Alex, Nimah and Natalie learn of Simon's abduction from a battered Elias, and find Simon with a detonator taped to his hand in the hotel where the Democratic delegates are staying. While Miranda works to defuse the bomb, Liam gets the delegates to the command center, where Senator Haas tells Shelby that she will ruin her for breaking Caleb's heart.

In the present day, Alex is the only one who thinks Elias did not act alone. However, she lies under oath as the FBI keep pressuring her. She then receives an anonymous phone call from someone who can confirm her theory. Drew's heroism changes saved Liam's and his own mind, so he resumes his promising training. In New York, Alex and her hesitant-rebellious FBI supervisor Hannah Wyland must obey the terrorist's voice to plant a closed envelope in the audience at Senator Haas's next electoral rally, totally lose control and the deputy director's confidence while Simon analysis the risk of the chip inside, and Ryan, who is dear to both, grows utterly suspicious of Alex and feels obliged to turn against her as loose canon, and the chip proves more clever then feared. On career day at Quantico, the NATS meet with the representatives of various FBI branches. Meanwhile, in the future, Alex's search for the terrorist brings her into contact with some familiar faces, including one who knows the terrorist's endgame.

In Quantico, the recruits are teamed up to be tested for zeal in various FBI postings. Caleb stars even on a filing assignment, but thick Iris, whom he asks to stop Shelby from seeking a post near the Canadian border so she can visit her parents, spills the beans, only to see Shelby dump Caleb and resign. Overzealous Alex nearly gets Brandon shot and accidentally finds out about Ryan's secret, having taken the blame for Liam. The flirting-forced twins fail to safely find their contact, yet are let off the book. In New York, Alex and Shelby find Drew terminally hospitalized for radiation and follow his lead to search desperately for the nuclear devise, only ti find out that Drew was the voice and claims Ryan, whom Liam took also,g when promoted to DC, put him up to it.
